5 TOP THINGS TO DO IN CRETE

Knossos Palace

The Knossos Palace is located just 5 km south of Heraklion city and is easily accessible by car, taxi, or local bus. It is the most important archaeological site in Crete, connected to the Minoan civilization and the myths of the Minotaur. Visitors can explore the ruins with or without a guide. The site is open year-round with an entrance fee.

Spinalonga

Spinalonga is a small island-fortress located in the Elounda Bay. It is accessible by boat from the villages of Elounda or Plaka, which are about 10 km from Agios Nikolaos. Regular boat trips are available, especially during the summer months. On the island, visitors can explore the remains of the fortress and the former leper colony, with a small entrance fee.

Samaria Gorge

The Samaria Gorge is located in the White Mountains in western Crete, within the Samaria National Park. The most common access is by car or bus to the Omalos Plateau, where the hike starts. The hike is 16 km long and ends at the coastal village of Agia Roumeli, which is accessible only by boat. From there, ferries go to Sougia or Chora Sfakion, with a return by bus. Good hiking shoes and water are essential!

Old Towns of Chania & Rethymno

The old towns of Chania and Rethymno are located on the northern coast of Crete and are easily accessible by car or bus. Chania is about 2.5 hours west of Heraklion, while Rethymno is about 1.5 hours away. Visitors can stroll through narrow streets with Venetian mansions, picturesque harbors, and enjoy the local character through cafés and traditional taverns.

Gramvousa

Gramvousa is a small island located off the northwest coast of Crete, known for its impressive Venetian castle and crystal-clear waters. Access is by boat from the port of Kissamos (or Kastelli), about 45 minutes west of Chania by car. Daily excursions often include a stop at Balos Lagoon. It is recommended to bring water, sunscreen, and comfortable shoes for hiking.
